The Path Less Traveled
During my time as a Help Desk Support Assistant, I’ve learned how to install/repair operating systems, setup new computers, and troubleshoot certain issues. It also provided a space where I have performed 90% of my recent coding.
I was recently assigned a project where I was tasked with taking inventory of all the peripheral devices around the office. In my downtime, I brainstormed ways I would write a program for maintaining this information. Eventually, I started writing a program that would monitor the inventory.
Two months have passed since its inception and I’m still adding features and optimizing the program using Java and SQLite plug-ins. One of my coworkers even volunteered to help me write the graphic user interface (GUI).
When starting out with employment, it can feel like a labyrinth with that dream job at the exit. We tend to over think our options with the perfect end in sight. But it’s good to seek jobs that you find interesting!
Even though it’s not a programming job, I enjoy working with computers and learning ways to maintain them. Additionally, I still perform coding in my free time and increase my understanding. This not only helps me learn the hard skills for the career I desire, but also the necessary time management skills for completing a work day efficiently. The money will follow if you choose wisely. Aiming for jobs that are consistent with your interests is a great way to stay focused and achieve your goals!
